We’ll admit it—we’re a little biased. But only because we love great-tasting food, and our all-purpose seasoning makes this coleslaw recipe next-level delicious. If you’re the kind of person who judges BBQ by the slaw, you’re going to love this easy, three-step coleslaw recipe.

We can’t make any promises if you use another brand’s seasoning—but hey, don’t let that stop you from giving it a shot. Just know that when we serve this slaw at big cookoff events like Rodeo Houston, people always come back for seconds. And the best part? You can make this exact slaw at home for your next family dinner in just three simple steps—no veggie chopping required if you grab a pre-shredded mix.

Try it, taste it, and see why we call this our go-to Texas-style coleslaw.

3 Step recipe

Vegetables:

  1. Coleslaw at its base is essentially a salad made up of 3 – 4 simple ingredients with cabbage being the star of the party. The essentials of a slaw are:
  2. Cabbage
  3. Red cabbage
  4. Shredded carrots
  5. Green onions or shallots or both if you prefer.

Anything beyond this is simply experimental but feel free to add anything else at a later time to make it your own. We are not saying not to but this particular recipe doesn’t really need anything more than the good’ol fashion traditional as we know it ingredients.

Dressing:

  1. Now let’s talk about the wet ingredients. The basics of the dressing are commonly as such:
  2. Vinegar (red wine, white wine, cider vinager) of your choosing.
  3. Lemon juice.
  4. Mayo or a Dejon Mustard (if you want it creamy)
  5. Salt, Pepper, and Sugar

While this is the basics to a traditional slaw, we said we are making this in three easy steps for you. Fast and easy—with a little extra. Don’t waste time trying to get your ratios of these ingredients just perfect. Instead, here is a shortcut or trade secret: Italian dressing.

Why? Italian dressings are primarily made up of just about the exact core ingredients of a traditional slaw. Plus, they even add that extra flare you may have been looking for, considering they use other herbs like oregano, basil, and thyme. So, if you are making this for dinner and want a fast, great-tasting slaw, pick up your favorite Italian dressing. I often use the one from Wish-Bone, but feel free to mix it up.

Seasonings:

Do we really need to go deep into this step? Probably not. The truth is, an all-purpose seasoning should be the base for just about every good meal. You should have a favorite—and plenty of it in your pantry.

You can create your own using individual spices, or shop around until you find one you love. Either way, buy it by the pound and use it often. As for us, we’ve tried plenty over the years, and we stand by our own: The Works” All-Purpose Seasoning by Xtreme Texas Cookers. It’s bold, balanced, and makes everything taste better—BBQ, sides, and everything in between.
